John Legend has been named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2019.
Blake Shelton, 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive, broke the news on “The Voice” Tuesday that his fellow coach Legend, the Grammy-winning husband of Chrissy Teigen, was the recipient of this year’s honor.
“It is my duty to formally introduce the next ‘Sexiest Man Alive,’ ” Shelton said. “He just so happens to be here tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, the man, the myth, the Legend: 2019’s Sexiest Man Alive.’ “
The crowd went wild.
Shelton continued, “You already came into this show with an EGOT. And, then you won ‘The Voice,’ so it became a VEGOT. Now you have a VEGOTSMA,” referring to Legend’s legendary list of accolades.
“Mostly I want to thank Blake Shelton,” said Legend. “I sat next to him for the last few months and learned his sexy ways. I observed every move he made, every utterance from his mouth. And some of it rubbed off on me.”
Legend said Teigen was “legit proud of me” for the honor as his wife went on a Twitter binge.
“I cannot WAIT for people to get mad about John being the sexiest man alive,” she wrote. “It’s my new Starbucks holiday cup.”
Teigen was not just bragging. Even in 2010 she had talked about her love of the “Sexiest Man” franchise.
“I take my Sexiest Man Alive’ very seriously,” she said at the time.
The magazine also went on a bit of a binge, tweeting out portions of Legend’s sexy interview. The special issue features two different covers: one wet look, one dry look. Both sexy.
“I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” Legend told People of the honor.
One reason for his clear concern, last year’s Sexiest Man Alive was Idris Elba. (Sorry, Blake.)
“Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!”
